One of the best things about Coronado is how many ways there are to get around. One of the trickiest things about buying here is that your daily routine depends heavily on which part of the island you choose. A few practical notes.
The bridge
The San Diego-Coronado Bridge is the main road connection to the mainland. If you commute off the island by car, test-drive your route at the actual hours you would travel, not on a quiet Sunday. It is a simple check that tells you more than any map.
The ferry
A ferry connects the Coronado Ferry Landing with downtown San Diego. For people who work or spend time downtown, it can replace a drive altogether. Check the current schedule and fares on the operator's site before you plan your week around it.
Walking in the Village
The area around Orange Avenue is the island's most walkable, with shops, restaurants and Spreckels Park close together. If walking to dinner and errands is a priority, keep your search near the Village.
Biking the bay
The Bayshore Bikeway runs along the bay and the Silver Strand, which makes riding a practical way to get around, not just recreation. If you plan to bike regularly, look at how easy it is to reach the path and where you would store bikes at the property.
Things to check before you buy
- Noise. Homes closer to Naval Air Station North Island can hear aircraft. Visit at different times of day and see how it feels to you.
- Parking. Ask what is included with a condo or a house, and what street parking is like on the block.
- Distance to what you use. Groceries, the gym, the ferry landing and the beach can be a short walk from one home and a real trip from another.
